Frederikshavn Walking tour
Explore Frederikshavn's wartime legacy and naval prominence on foot and with your private guide. Visit landmarks like the Gunpowder Tower and the historic church, and wander the quaint old town once bustling with fishermen.
There has always been people living on the shores where Frederikshavn is located today, before the beginning of the 1800’s this place was known as Fladstrand – Flat Beach. During the World War II this was an important city for the Germans during the occupying of Denmark. The Germans were holding this city, and making fortifications on top of the hill, securing the materials from Norway. After the war, the location of the city was still important; from here the Danish navy held an eye out for communists and to this day, it is the largest naval base in Denmark.
This walking tour offers a great introduction to this place in the northern part of Denmark. From the pier it is a short walk to the first, and properly the most iconic landmark of Frederikshavn – the Gunpowder Tower. The tower dates back to 1690. It was a big part of the important naval fortification but serves as a museum today. You may want to take a sneak peek inside the tower before continuing on the walk around Frederikhavn.
The tour will head towards the most prominent church of the city, holding an altar piece by the famous Skagen painter Michael Ancher. The church was erected in 1892 and welcomes more than a thousand visitors each year. Slowly you are making your way to the old part of town called ‘Fiskerklyngen’, an area with small houses originally built and inhabited by fishermen. Since then, the fishermen have given way to the people of the city in this charming area.
