Charming Islands & Private Alnes Lighthouse Visit
Charming Islands & Private Alnes Lighthouse Visit
Venture beyond Ålesund to the windswept western islands of Giske and Godøy, where Viking history and Atlantic seascapes converge in a journey of legend and landscape.
Travel by coach across striking bridges and a 4.2 km undersea tunnel to the storied island of Giske — known as “Saga Island,” birthplace of the Viking chieftain Rollo, who later founded Normandy in 911. A photo stop at Giske Church reveals Norway’s only marble medieval church, originally built in 1150 as a private chapel for one of the country’s most powerful noble families, viewed from the outside.
Continuing westward to Godøy Island, the scenery shifts from fertile farmland to rugged Atlantic coastline. The fishing village of Alnes greets you with colorful cottages and open sea horizons. At Alnes Lighthouse, established in 1852 to guide fishermen safely home, guests enjoy a private visit to the former lighthouse keeper’s house.
Here, a tapas-style meal featuring local specialties is served in an intimate coastal setting. Afterward, those who wish may climb the lighthouse stairs for panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean and scattered offshore islets.
This refined island escape blends Viking heritage, maritime history, and authentic local flavors in a memorable journey through Norway’s windswept Atlantic islands.
Notes: This excursion includes some steps when boarding and disembarking transportation. The tour involves optional steps, uneven ground, gradual slopes, and natural terrain. At the photo stop at Giske Church, the visit is exterior only with uneven ground at the site. At Alnes Lighthouse there is indoor access with optional stairs, and guests may choose to climb the lighthouse via a narrow and steep staircase typical of historic Norwegian coastal lighthouses; this climb takes place after the meal and is optional. Paths around coastal viewpoints may consist of uneven or natural terrain. This excursion is not wheelchair accessible. A comfort stop is available at Alnes Lighthouse. Visibility of sights may be affected by adverse weather conditions. Guests are recommended to dress in layered clothing to accommodate changing weather and to wear flat, comfortable walking shoes.
