Visit the highlights of Giske community, combining history with spectacular scenery.

The community of Giske consists of four islands. On this tour you will visit the two most charming and scenic islands which lie furthest to the west. The drive to Giske & Godøy islands takes you via bridges and underwater tunnels, the longest being 4,2 km.

Giske is known as the Saga Island for the fact that the Viking Chieftain Rollo was born here. Chieftain Rollo, was known for the invasion and founding of Normandy in 911. This fairly flat and fertile island had a unique position during the Viking Era and was the seat of one of Norway’s most powerful noble families. On the island you will stop at the old stone church dating back to 1150. The church was originally built as a private chapel for the mighty and noble Giske family. Today this church is Norway’s only marble church and is still in use.

From Giske continue to Godøy Island. On the north-western side of the island you drive towards the small but picturesque fishing village of Alnes, situated facing the Atlantic Ocean. Here you will discover the Alnes Lighthouse which was established in 1852 to guide fishing boats safely to the harbor. You will be treated to a private visit in the lighthouse keepers house and served a tapas meal with local specialities. After the meal you are invited to take a closer look at the lighthouse, and climb the stairs to the top to be dazzled by the striking view of the ocean and coastline.

Notes: It is recommended that guests dress in layered clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. This tour involves optional steps, uneven ground, and gradual slopes. Photo stop at Giske Church, no inside visit. Visibility of sights may be affected in adverse weather conditions. Comfort stop available at Alnes Lighthouse. This excursion is not wheelchair accessible.
