Visit the thousand-year-old monastery on the island of Selja and uncover the inspiring story of Saint Sunniva, a courageous princess who became Norway’s first and only saint.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive through a landscape of striking contrasts, where towering mountains meet the vast ocean, leading you to the charming village of Selje. Enjoy a guided walk through the village before embarking on a short boat trip to the secluded island of Selja. Stepping ashore feels like traveling back in time.

Discover the fascinating history of St. Sunniva and the ancient monastery as you explore the very halls where Benedictine monks lived over 700 years ago. Climb the stairways to the top of the tower for breathtaking views, then follow in the footsteps of St. Sunniva to the sacred Sunniva Cave, where legend and history intertwine. From this vantage point, take in the magnificent sight of Selja Abbey, a place steeped in history and spiritual significance.

Notes: It is recommended to dress in layered clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes. It is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Walking to the viewpoint at Selje Monastery is optional and covers 120 steps.
