In the Path of the Vikings
In the Path of the Vikings
The Lofoten Islands are inseparable from the Viking story. On this immersive journey from Reine, you travel through a landscape of jagged peaks, deep fjords, and fertile plains — terrain once shaped by Norse settlement, trade, and exploration more than a thousand years ago.
Your destination is Lofotr Viking Museum, located at Borg, the site of the largest Viking chieftain’s longhouse ever discovered. Built on archaeological foundations, the museum recreates an entire Viking village, allowing you to step directly into daily life during the Viking Age.
As you explore the longhouse and surrounding buildings, exhibitions of excavated artifacts reveal how Vikings lived, governed, worshipped, and traveled. Skilled interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts, and guests are invited to try activities such as archery and axe throwing, offering a tangible connection to ancient skills and techniques. The visit concludes with a Viking-inspired meal, served in an atmospheric setting and accompanied by a locally brewed beer created especially for Lofotr. As you return to Reine, the surrounding Lofoten landscape provides a powerful reminder of why these islands played such a central role in Viking history.
This experience blends archaeology, storytelling, and participation in a setting rooted in historical research, offering a compelling cultural highlight for guests seeking depth, context, and a strong sense of place.
Notes: This tour involves approximately 450 m (0.3 miles) of walking over uneven terrain with gradual slopes. Surfaces at historical and rural sites are natural, including gravel and compacted earth. Participation in archery and axe throwing is supervised and optional. Guests are advised to dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions and to wear comfortable walking shoes. The tour may be affected by potential closures of the Nappstraumtunnelen undersea tunnel, which could result in delays. Efforts will be made to adjust the itinerary and manage the schedule accordingly.
