Discover Getaria & Traditional Txakoli Tasting
The Bay of Biscay has shaped both the landscape and spirit of Getaria—a medieval walled town perched on a hillside along Spain’s northern coast. This charming port is not only the birthplace of the great explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe, but also of famed fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.
Your experience begins with a guided walking tour through the narrow cobblestone streets of Getaria. Pass medieval stone houses, the bustling port, and the scenic boulevard that stretches toward the Hermitage of San Antón, located on the distinctive Mount San Antón—nicknamed “the Mouse of Getaria” for its unique shape as it juts into the sea.
The town’s rich maritime history includes centuries of whaling, as depicted in its coat of arms—a whale pierced with a harpoon.
After exploring the village, you’ll visit a traditional txakoli winery. Txakoli is a crisp, slightly effervescent white wine unique to the Basque Country, known for its fresh acidity and fruity character. Produced primarily along the coast, this wine reflects the region’s oceanic influence. You’ll tour the winery, learn about the production process, and enjoy a tasting served chilled to highlight its lively aromas and delicate bubbles.
