Castellet and the Secrets of Provençal Honey

Castellet and the Secrets of Provençal Honey

Begin your journey with a short and pleasant drive from St. Cyr to a traditional miellerie, where the ancient art of honey production comes to life. Honey gathering dates back thousands of years, with evidence found in prehistoric caves, ancient Greek vessels, and early Indian and Chinese texts. At the honey farm, you will learn how beekeeping evolved from these early civilizations to modern sustainable practices. Your hosts will guide you through the fascinating world of bees, their essential role in nature, and the meticulous process of transforming nectar into golden honey.

Following your introduction to beekeeping, enjoy a tasting of several honey varieties, each reflecting the unique floral landscapes of Provence. After this flavorful experience, continue to the hilltop village of Castellet, a beautifully preserved medieval stronghold perched above vineyards and wooded slopes. Once owned by the Lords of Les Baux, the village features impressive ramparts, a restored 12th century church, and a castle with origins in the 11th century. Enter through its fortified gates and begin your guided walk through narrow, winding streets rich with history and charm.

As you explore Castellet, admire the Church of Saint Sauveur with its distinctive windows and pause at the “Trou de Madame,” a scenic viewpoint offering sweeping vistas toward Sainte Baume and the Paul Ricard Circuit. The village is also known for its artisan workshops, where painters, potters, and craftspeople showcase their creations. Enjoy free time to browse the boutiques, take photos, or simply soak in the Provençal atmosphere. Afterward, rejoin your coach for a relaxing return to St. Cyr, concluding a delightful blend of culture, tradition, and local flavor.
