La Ciotat: Soap & Stroll

La Ciotat: Soap & Stroll

Begin your journey with a short and scenic drive from St. Cyr to La Ciotat, a charming Mediterranean resort town known for its turquoise waters, pebble beaches, and relaxed Provencal atmosphere. Nestled between Cassis and Marseille, La Ciotat has long attracted European visitors seeking sun drenched coastlines and picturesque seaside views. The town is also steeped in cultural heritage: it is the birthplace of pétanque, invented here in 1910, and famously recognized as the cradle of cinema, where the Lumière brothers filmed the world’s first motion picture in 1895.
Your walking exploration begins with a visit to “Le Savonnier des Calanques,” a traditional soap atelier where Philippe, your host, welcomes you into the fragrant world of artisanal soapmaking. During an engaging demonstration, learn about the centuries old craft of producing olive oil based soaps, the benefits of natural ingredients for the skin, and the differences between authentic Marseille soap and this local creation. Guests are invited to cut and stamp their own small bar of soap to take home as a personal souvenir. A tasting of organic olive oil follows, offering a flavorful glimpse into Provence’s culinary traditions.
After the demonstration, continue your exploration of La Ciotat with free time to wander its inviting streets, browse small boutiques, or enjoy the coastal ambiance at your own pace. The town’s blend of maritime heritage, artisanal culture, and scenic beauty makes it a delightful place to stroll and discover. Whether you choose to admire the waterfront, shop for local crafts, or simply relax in the warm Mediterranean light, this leisurely interlude adds a charming balance to your afternoon. Rejoin your coach for a comfortable return to the yacht, concluding a memorable visit to this historic Provencal gem.
