Guimarães, a UNESCO Heritage site
Guimarães, a UNESCO Heritage site
Travel inland to Guimarães, widely regarded as the birthplace of Portugal and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkably preserved medieval center. Upon arrival, begin a guided walk through the historic core, where narrow cobbled streets weave between granite townhouses adorned with wrought-iron balconies and wooden arcades. As you stroll within the ancient city walls, your guide explains how this compact hill town became central to the foundation of the Portuguese nation in the 12th century.
Walk toward Guimarães Castle, where its imposing stone towers and fortified walls dominate the hillside. View the exterior of the fortress, learn about its strategic role in the early battles for independence and its association with Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Nearby, view the Romanesque Church of São Miguel do Castelo, a modest yet historically significant structure linked to the country’s origins.
Continue on foot through Largo da Oliveira and Praça de Santiago, two of the city’s most emblematic squares, framed by centuries-old façades and arcaded buildings. As you move through these lively yet intimate spaces, observe local life unfolding among cafés and small artisan shops. This guided walking experience offers a detailed introduction to Portugal’s early history, experienced entirely within the atmospheric streets of its most symbolic medieval town. At the conclusion of your visit, rejoin your coach for a relaxed drive back to the port.
Notes: This tour is conducted entirely on foot and requires extended walking, covering approximately 1.2 km (0.75 miles). The route includes uneven cobblestone surfaces, some inclines within the old town, and a considerable number of steps throughout. Guests should be comfortable walking for prolonged periods on historic terrain. The transfer time between Porto and Guimarães is approximately 60 minutes each way. Comfortable walking shoes with good support are strongly recommended.
