Saksun Village & Coastal Landscapes
Saksun Village & Coastal Landscapes
From Runavík, the drive follows the shoreline of Skálafjørður, passing small settlements set between the fjord and steep green slopes. The route continues through a subsea tunnel to the western side of Eysturoy, emerging toward the narrow channel of Sundini. At Norðskála, there is a brief stop at a flat viewpoint overlooking the strait and surrounding mountains. A short drive brings you to the bridge spanning the channel, where guests may walk across its mostly level surface and observe the strong tidal currents that form visible eddies below.
The journey continues by coach toward Saksun, with the landscape opening into broader valleys framed by high ridges. Upon arrival, the visit includes time to explore the village on foot over gently uneven terrain of grass and cobblestones. The historic Dúvugarðar farmhouse, now a heritage museum, provides insight into traditional Faroese rural life, with preserved interiors and adjoining outbuildings. Below, the lagoon, once a natural harbor, forms a sheltered basin bordered by sandbanks, creating a distinct coastal setting within the mountains.
After departing Saksun, the return drive retraces part of the route, offering additional views of fjords and hillside farms along the way. A final brief stop is made at a viewpoint overlooking Skálafjørður, where the wide fjord extends between layered mountain ridges. The location is flat and open, allowing for clear views before continuing the short drive back to the yacht in Runavík.
Notes: The optional walk across the bridge is mostly flat and includes 2 steps. The visit to Saksun involves uneven terrain, including grass, cobblestones, and small inclines. Ground conditions may be wet or slippery due to frequent rain. Temperatures are generally cool year-round; warm clothing is recommended, along with layered and windproof outerwear.
