Hiking the Floating Lake of Vágar

Hiking the Floating Lake of Vágar

Departing from Runavík on the island of Eysturoy, the journey begins with a scenic drive through the subsea tunnel connecting to Streymoy, notable for featuring the world’s only undersea roundabout. Continuing onward to Vágar Island, the route traverses changing island landscapes before reaching the starting point of the hike. This overland transfer provides a gradual introduction to the Faroe Islands’ distinctive terrain, with views shifting from coastal settlements to open, rugged countryside.

Upon arrival on Vágar, the guided hike leads across mountain terrain with uneven ground toward Lake Leitisvatn, also known as Sørvágsvatn. The trail includes several natural steps and ascends to the cliffside viewpoint of Trælanípan. From this vantage point, guests observe the lake positioned dramatically above the ocean, creating the well-known visual effect of a “floating lake.” The location offers clear sightlines over both the freshwater lake and the surrounding coastline, making it a focal point for photography.

Following time at the viewpoint, the hike retraces its path back to the starting point. Guests then reboard the coach for the return drive, following the same route across Vágar, Streymoy, and through the subsea tunnel back to Runavík. The return journey provides a final opportunity to observe the interconnected island landscape before arriving back at the port.

Notes: The excursion involves hiking on mountain terrain with uneven ground, several steps along the route, and trails that may be narrow or soft underfoot depending on recent weather conditions. Certain sections run near cliff edges and require careful footing and attention, particularly at the Trælanípa viewpoint, which is an open cliff area without barriers. Guests must follow all guide instructions when navigating exposed areas. Weather conditions may affect visibility, and the “floating lake” effect depends on viewing angle, with fog or low cloud potentially obscuring views. Warm clothing is recommended. Transfers to and from the port are approximately 1 hour each way.
