A Faroese Farmer’s Life

A Faroese Farmer’s Life

Our first stop will be at the “sheephouse” located on the hillside above the village of Nes. It belongs to the “á Torkilsheyggi” family, who will introduce us to the sheep farming calendar and explain the various products made from sheep and wool. You will also have the opportunity to see the sheep up close. During the visit, you will enjoy a small tasting of Faroese dried meat along with a local rhubarb refreshment.

After visiting the sheephouse, we will drive a short distance to Navia wool shop. This company is owned by the same sheep farmer and focuses on developing and producing innovative products for the yarn and knitting industry.

We will then continue towards the village of Gøta. Following a scenic drive, we will arrive at “Varmakeldugarðurin.” This farm, owned by husband and wife Janus and Bára Joensen, dates back to 1976 and has been run by them since 2000. They are both sheep and dairy farmers. During our visit, we will explore their dairy production. The farm has more than 150 cows, including around 65 milking cows, producing approximately 690,000 liters of milk each year.

While enjoying a cup of coffee and cake on the first floor, overlooking the stables through glass windows, we will gain insight into the farm and its operations. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to enter the stables and meet the cows. Please note that plastic overshoes must be worn to access the stables.

After these visits, and with a deeper understanding of Faroese farming, we will return to the yacht.

Notes: The visit includes some steps at both the Navia wool shop and the dairy farm. Agricultural sites may feature wet, muddy, or uneven surfaces depending on recent weather conditions. Guests are required to follow all on-site instructions when entering stables or animal areas. Farming activities may vary depending on the season and daily operations.
