Ancient Lewis & Blackhouse Village
Ancient Lewis & Blackhouse Village
Departing from Stornoway, travel across the island’s west coast toward the Callanish Standing Stones, set on a peninsula extending into East Loch Roag. Dating from around 3000 BC, this site features 32 stones arranged in a circular and avenue formation, believed to have been used for astronomical observation. The stones rise from the landscape in a distinctive formation, allowing close exploration of their layout and setting.
Continue along the coast to Dun Carloway, a Pictish broch built in the last century BC. This stone structure functioned as a defensible residence for an extended family, with animals housed on the ground level, and remains a prominent example of early settlement design. The tour then proceeds north to Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, a reconstructed crofting community where traditional dry-stone houses with thatched roofs illustrate historical living conditions.
At Gearrannan, visit the small museum and view demonstrations of crofting activities, subject to availability. The site is located along the Atlantic coast, offering open views across the surrounding landscape. The return journey follows a circular route across moorland, providing additional views of the island before arriving back in Stornoway.
Notes: Walking involves some rough and uphill paths, including grassy surfaces with stones. Ground conditions may be wet, boggy, or slippery, especially after rain. At the Callanish Standing Stones, which is an open-access archaeological site, visitors are able to walk freely around the stones. Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended. Wheelchair users must be accompanied by a companion responsible for providing assistance throughout the tour.
