East Light Coastal Walk
East Light Coastal Walk
Guests arrive on Rathlin Island and begin a guided walking tour across the island’s eastern end, following a circular route through open countryside and along coastal paths. The walk progresses at a steady pace, with sections that include gentle inclines and varied terrain. As the route unfolds, guests are guided toward viewpoints overlooking the surrounding sea, where clear sightlines extend toward the mainland. The landscape combines farmland and shoreline, with the path allowing continuous views across the water and along the island’s quieter eastern coastline.
As the walk continues, the Rathlin East Light Lighthouse comes into view, positioned along the coastline and serving as a focal point for the route. Guests pause at selected vantage points to observe the structure and its setting within the surrounding landscape. Throughout the walk, the guide shares historical context related to the island, including references to a 17th-century battle and local stories associated with Rathlin’s past. These points are delivered at intervals along the route, aligned with key locations encountered during the walk.
The circular route continues across the island, following sections of countryside and coastal path as it progresses at a steady pace. There are brief opportunities to pause along the way before the walk concludes at the tender jetty.
Notes: This tour involves an extensive level of activity and requires guests to be physically fit. The walking route includes hills and follows coastal paths and rural tracks that may be uneven, with grassy, gravel, or worn surfaces. Bird activity is seasonal, with higher concentrations typically in spring and early summer; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed and may vary depending on time of year and conditions. Waterproof outerwear and layered clothing are recommended year-round. The order of the tour may vary.
