Miletus and the Oracle of Apollo
Miletus and the Oracle of Apollo
Departing from Kuşadası, travel inland through the Aegean countryside toward ancient Miletus, once one of the great cities of the Greek world. As the landscape opens, your guide introduces the significance of this former harbor city, long associated with commerce, science, and philosophy. On arrival, walk through a site where the scale of the ruins still conveys its former stature. The visit centers on the monumental Roman theater, one of the largest in the region, together with the baths, agoras, and remaining urban vestiges that define the plan of this once-powerful city.
From Miletus, continue by coach to Didyma to explore the Temple of Apollo, one of antiquity’s most important sanctuaries. The approach reveals the temple’s vast scale, once expressed through 120 Ionic columns, and the visit focuses on the remains that still convey its architectural ambition. This was the seat of the famed oracle of Apollo, consulted by rulers and political leaders across the ancient Mediterranean. Walking through the sacred precinct, observe the surviving structural elements and the dramatic setting of the sanctuary, while your guide explains its religious role and enduring importance in the ancient world.
After time at Didyma, rejoin your vehicle for the return journey to Kuşadası, where your yacht awaits.
Notes: The drive to and from the port is approximately 1 hour each way. This tour involves an extensive level of physical activity, with walking over exposed stone paths, uneven ground, and archaeological surfaces rather than smooth urban pavement, as well as several steps to negotiate between the two sites. This tour is not wheelchair accessible. Comfortable clothing, sturdy closed-toe footwear, and a hat are recommended. As Miletus and Didyma are open archaeological sites with little natural shade, heat and sun exposure can be significant, especially in the warmer months, and sunscreen is recommended.
