Calpe & Altea Scenic Drive

Calpe & Altea Scenic Drive

Depart by air-conditioned coach from the pier of Altea, heading for the village. We will stop at one of the main "plazas", "Plaza de Iglesia" at the top part of the village to go visit the old town. As this is so pleasantly situated you may enjoy some free time strolling around or popping into one of the local shops to buy something memorable or see some local art at a gallery. Join your guide again to visit the "Plaza de la Iglesia" and discover charming narrow streets and corners of this lovely village.

We then rejoin the coach for the drive to Calpe. Calpe's old town still has nice wide avenues where modern buildings and old architecture collide; not always in an attractive fashion. Calpe is almost three thousand years old and in this area it still retains a sense of history and tradition. The Romans established a wealthy colony on this coast where the main activity was the trade of dried and salted fish.

Calpe's Salt Lake played a major role in the history of this region. The lakes were abandoned in 1834 but were restored to their ecological significance by a new owner in the 1920s. We next arrive at the fishing port which is towered over by the "Penon de Ifach", a massive outcrop of rock. Here we will be offered a refreshing glass of "Sangria" and taste a typical dish of this village that consists of little fish, with an egg batter and then lightly fried, at a restaurant on the bay. The fishing boats returning from sea make for a picturesque backdrop.
After this pleasant break, we rejoin the coach for the drive back to the tender pier.
