Explore Telmessos & Kayakoy "Ghost" Village

Enjoy a morning walk through history around the Fethiye region. We will see ancient momuments of the Lycian city of Telmessos in the modern town of Fethiye and also visit the museum village of Kayakoy.
Telmessos was the most important city of Lycia, with a recorded history starting in the 5th Century BC. Ancient Egyptian records describe the Lycians as allies of the Hittites and Homer writes of the Lycians as allies of Troy.

The city life was rich and highly cultured during the Hellenistic and Roman periods as evidenced from the existing monuments. Today the majority of ancient ruins in Telmessos are rock-tombs, Lycian-type sarcophagi, the fortress and the Roman Theatre which can be seen around the town.

We will then drive to Kayakoy, a village abandoned in 1923 as part of the Greek/Turkish population exchange which displaced two million people. We explore the ruins on foot and visit two beautifully frescoed churches. Further uphill is the "Ghost " town, now preserved as a museum village, consisting of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches which cover a small mountainside. The village was built in the 1700's on the site of the ancient city of Carmylessus. It experienced a renewal after nearby Fethiye was devastated by an earthquake in 1856 and a major fire in 1885.

After the Greco-Turkish war, Kayakoy was largely abandoned after the Greek were deported to Greece in 1923.

After exploring the village we rejoin the bus and return to the ship.
