Vrana Olive Press Museum, Village of Plomari & Ouzo Tasting

Mytilini Island (Lesvos) is famous for two products: olive oil and ouzo. Taking this SeaDream Land Adventure you will have the opportunity to learn some secrets for both these products by visiting the Olive Press Museum located in beautiful Papados village and the well-known Barbayiannis ouzo distillery at the seaside village of Plomari. You depart from the port with your motor coach and have a scenic drive through Mytilini town where you will admire the fine architecture of many old mansions, you head south following the beautiful coastline of the Gulf of Gera. Your first stop will be the village of Papados, one of the most important villages in Mytilini, where you will visit the Vrana Old Olive Press Museum which was one of the first steam-powered factories in the Aegean. It was built in 1887 by Nikolaos Vranas who was the grandfather of the famous Greek poet Odysseas Elytis and it was in operation till the 1970s. Constructed by stone and marble, Vrana Oil Press is an impressive building with special architecture. Apart from the rooms, the machinery has also been restored and visitors can see among them a diesel machine TANGYE, constructed in Birmingham UK, one of the world’s seven of this kind. Also, paintings by famous Greek artists inspired by olive trees and olive oil are exhibited in this Industrial Museum. Continuing on we reach the beautiful coastal village of Plomari, the center of the cultural and economic activity of the island for many decades, famous today for its distilleries which provide Lesvos with perhaps the best ouzo in Greece. The architecture of the town is pretty amazing with giant old mansions, decaying factories and olive presses. In the beach “suburb” of Plomari, Agios Isidoros, you will visit the ouzo-distillery of Barbayiannis. The distillery has a museum section and a production section. You will visit both sections of the distillery and experience the methods of “creating” real ouzo, now and then. You will also have the chance to taste the Barbayiannis ouzo, probably the best ouzo in the world. Following your visit to the distillery, you will re-board your coaches to return to Mytilini port and your SeaDream yacht.
