Gorda Peak National Park, Virgin Gorda

Gorda Peak National Park

Rising above Leverick Bay, Gorda Peak National Park is a 254-acre sanctuary often hidden in plain sight. As one of the last remaining examples of Caribbean dry forest, it offers a network of lush trails leading to Virgin Gorda’s highest point at 1,370 feet. The path winds through tropical vegetation before reaching a lookout tower, where sweeping views unfold across the British Virgin Islands and the serene anchorage at North Sound, Virgin Gorda. On clear days, Anegada Island appears on the distant horizon, an unforgettable reward for the climb.

The Copper Mine, Virgin Gorda

The Copper Mine

The Copper Mine on Virgin Gorda is one of the island’s most significant historical landmarks. Built and operated by Cornish miners in the 1800s, the facility extracted copper ore that was shipped to Wales for refinement. The complex once featured a stone chimney, steam engine house, mine shafts, and roasting pits —all strategically positioned along the windy southeastern coast to power operations. Abandoned in 1862 due to declining profitability, the site now forms Virgin Gorda’s national park where visitors can view its surviving structures and learn about the British influence on the island. Several miners remained after closure, marrying local families and contributing to the cultural fabric of Virgin Gorda.
