Description
This tour takes you west from Funchal and through the hotel and residential area of town. Winding along the coast, the road passes by the village of Câmara de Lobos “The Sea wolves' Lair”, a picturesque fishing village, once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. A stop will be made to allow you to explore some of the surrounding area and try a famous local drink called “Poncha”, made from Rum and honey at a local bar with a live demostration.
The road then heads up the mountains and passes by the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara Lobos, one of the most important winegrowing areas of the island. The steep valleys offer good examples of the terraced cultivation seen throughout Madeira. To reach Cabo Girão, we drive through pine woods and eucalyptus forest, easily identifiable by their scent. Cabo Girão is the second highest sea cliff in the world, and the highest in Europe. It rises sheer from the sea, so that the viewpoint offers breathtaking views along the coast, over Funchal, and out over the distant horizon. Continue along the winding road which offers spectacular views en route to Eira do Serrado. Here a short ascent on an easy path leads to the summit of Pico do Serrado (about 3,000 feet). There are superb views of Madeira's highest peaks and the Curral das Freiras village below, a hamlet so remote that the Santa Clara Convent Nuns used it as an escape from the pirate raids of the 16th century. Here you will get the opportunity to try another local drink called “ginja”, a liqueur with a slice of Madeira Honey cake. On return to Funchal, the tour stops at The Blandy Wine Lodge, so that you have the opportunity to taste Madeira Wine, world famous for centuries.
