    Valletta

Valletta, The Fortress City, is Malta's capital city: a living, working city, the administrative and commercial heart of the Islands. Valletta is named after its founder, the respected Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Valette. The magnificent fortress city grew on the arid rock of Mount Sceberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbours, Marsamxett and Grand Harbour. Ottoman forces numbering 40,000 laid siege to the island from May to September 1565, without success. The heavily outnumbered army of 700 knights and around 8000 Maltese regular troops took refuge in the fortified town on the Grand Harbour. Started in 1566, the city of Valletta was completed, with its impressive bastions, forts, and cathedral, in the astonishingly short time of 15 years. The city is busy by day, yet retains a timeless atmosphere. The grid of narrow streets boasts some of Europe's finest art works, churches and palaces. Walking around Valletta you'll come across an intriguing historical site around every corner: votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. Narrow side streets are full of tiny quaint shops and cafes, while Valletta's main streets are lined with larger international branded shops for fashion, music, jewelry and much more.

  • Otranto
    Otranto

The easternmost town on the Italian mainland, Otranto enchants with its medieval architecture and relaxed beachfront atmosphere. As you approach the modest façade of the town’s 11th-century cathedral, admire the delicately carved rose window, a preview of the wonders found within, which include an extraordinary mosaic floor known as the Tree of Life. The imposing Castello Aragonese invites exploration both along the ramparts and in the dry moat, a perfect vantage point from which to admire the fort’s massive cylindrical towers. Sun-lovers flock to the town’s beaches, which wrap around a protected cove lapped by gentle waves. While roaming the Old Town’s warren of narrow streets and cozy squares, you’ll discover enticing shops and eateries housed in age-old stone buildings. Later in the day, both residents and visitors congregate on the seaside promenade for their passeggiata, a typical Italian stroll that affords marvelous views of the sparkling sea. Stop at one of Otranto’s many excellent restaurants for a taste of orecchiette, which amusingly means small ear in Italian and is a popular regional pasta often served with savory ricotta.

  • Sarande (Butrint), Albania
    Sarande (Butrint), Albania

This attractively situated port and the seaside town lies in the very south of Albania, close to the border with Greece. The Greek island of Corfu can be clearly seen across the channel. The town is built back from a small beach with a pleasant palm-fringed esplanade. Located close by are not one, but two different UNESCO World Heritage sites! The first is the ancient city of Butrint which is now a national park where the remains of 3,000 years of occupation are piled on top of one another. The other site is the town of Gjirokastra, where the old town is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town.

  • Fiskardo, Kefalonia
    Fiskardo, Kefalonia

Fiskardo is a village located about 54 km north of Argostoli and a district of the city of Erisos. The coast around Fiskardo is mainly rocky with numerous pebble-beached coves. There are numerous viewpoints in the area around the village that offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea including Daskalio island, Ithaca, northwestern Aetolia-Acarnania and the island of Lefkada.

  • Zakynthos
    Zakynthos

The island-municipality is named after the son of a legendary Arcadian chief and a son of Zeus, Dardanus. The Venetians nicknamed the island “the flower of the East”, and it possesses many beautiful beaches and rich vegetation with agricultural products such as citrus fruit, olive oil, grapes and currants. It is known for being mentioned in Greek Mythology as the island where Dardanus’s son Zakynthos first inhabited. Zakynthos is also referred to its Venetian name “Zante”. As expected of any part of Greece, the culture and history of Zakynthos is rich and extensive, dating back to the Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age). Oldest mentions of the island date back to the Mycenaean period, and ancient Greek poet Homer included Zakynthos in his famous works, the Odyssey and the Iliad. Zakynthos was the first established independent democracy in Greece for 650 years prior to several invasions that led to Byzantine rule. The Kingdom of Sicily and the Ottoman Turks attempted to rule Zakynthos, however it was the Venetian Republic that maintained authority, despite subsequent Ottoman raid attempts and little peace experienced internally, as the existence of classes led to the first social revolt in modern history, The Rebellion of the Popolari. The French were awarded Zakynthos when the Venetian Republic was disbanded in 1797 as per the Treaty of Campoformio. That is, until the Russo-Turkish fleet invaded the island in 1798 and the Septinsular Republic was formed under the Ottoman empire. The Septinsular Republic was eventually ceded to Napoleon’s First French Empire, however the Treaty of Paris resulted in the gradual shift of rule to the British after the Greek War of Independence. Around 1848, radicals gave rise to varied Ionian efforts to unite with the Kingdom of Greece, which would be granted in 1864 as Britain sought to stabilize rule for George I. The World Wars would take a toll on Zakynthos, with emigration and starvation reducing the population in the First War, and joint efforts from Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy would result in Italian rule. When fascism fell in Italy, Germans took the Ionian Islands for one year. Most interesting was Mayor Karrer and Bishop Chrysostomos of Nazi Germany, who refused orders and protected the Jewish community in Zakynthos, which resulted in the survival of all Jews on the island. The two would receive honors and be commemorated with statues in the town’s synagogue. Unfortunately, Zakynthos became subject to major earthquakes in 1953, and a few subsequent ones which caused great destruction, leaving only 3 important buildings: the church of St. Nicholas, St. Dionysios Cathedral, and the National Bank building. Tourism truly thrives as there are many beautiful splendors in Zakynthos. The island is well known scuba diving in surrounding caves and for Navagio Beach, which name comes from a famous shipwreck in 1980. Tourists enjoy Porto Limnionas Beach, Blue Caves, Keri Caves, Turtle Island, Banana Beach, and the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle habitat, the Zakynthos Marine Park in the Bay of Laganas. Zakynthos is additionally interesting because the cuisine isn’t typically Greek: Rich, thicker sauces accompany dishes that incorporate more poultry and meat than other Greek cuisine. There is also a rich wine culture on the island; Comoutos Winery is one of the oldest running wineries, established in 1638, and the island’s most famous wine, Verdea, is one of the only two wines in Greece under the PGI Category. Guests are urged to explore the Venetian castle on Bochali Hill, to get a panoramic view of Zakynthos Town.

  • Monemvasia
    Monemvasia

Monemvasia is on the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese archipelago. The town is a part of the municipality of Laconia, and draws its name from the Greek terms “mone” and “emvasia”, meaning “single entrance”. Within the last few decades, the medieval buildings were restored, GR-86 was built to connect to the mainland, and tourism had begun to flourish. It's known for its hidden Byzantine fortress town, bearing Venetian, Frankish, Ottoman and, of course, Byzantine influence. Its nickname is “The Rock”, and “the Gibraltar of the East”. 8,000 years ago, in ancient Cape Minoa, Monemvasia was a port of call for travelers between Greece, the Cyclades, and Crete. It is believed that the rock was a Minoan trading post in its antiquity, and helped join the Mycenaean and Minoan cultures. Monemvasia was joined with the Peloponnese mainland until 375 AD when a massive earthquake compromised the region’s geomorphology. Historical towns such as Asopos, Vies, Epidaurus Limera and Plythra were either partly or completely submerged as a result of the earthquake. Earliest Laconian settlers were Greek refugees escaping the Arab and Visigoth invasions in 583 AD. From the 10th century AD on, the town became a core maritime and trade port. The town’s geographic positioning made it a strategic stronghold for the Byzantine military operations - so much so that it ultimately became the last Byzantine stronghold to fall to Greece and the first liberated fortress in the Peloponnese for Greece which led to success during the ongoing fight against the Turks in 1821. Over the centuries, there were many battles between the Venetians, Byzantines, Franks, Turks, as well as the Pope, as they realized the geopolitical importance of Monemvasia. Its recent resurgence in importance was born from its increase in tourist interest. Tourists visit the Monemvasia Fortress, as well as the Christos Elkomenos Church, and archeological site of Epidavros Limera. Climb to the church of Hagia Sophia to catch a glimpse of the most magnificent views of the town and the Myrtoan Sea.

  • Nafplion
    Nafplion

Nafplion is a seaport town in the Peloponnese region of Greece that expands up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. This is simply one of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the most romantic cities all over Greece. SeaDream has the option to anchor allowing water sports or to dock in the heart of town offering amazing access. Some guests will climb nearly 1000 steps to the fortress. Others may want to participate in the wine tasting adventure or to Visit Mycenae.

  • Athens (Piraeus)
    Athens (Piraeus)

Piraeus, roughly translating to “the place over the passage”, is an important Greek port located within the Athens agglomeration, in the Attica Basin. It is 12 kilometers from the municipality of Athens, considered the fourth largest and is the third most populous amongst all the municipalities of Greece. Now a peninsula, Piraeus, originally a rocky island, was developed in early 5th Century B.C. when it was initially designated as Athens’ import and transit trade port. It is the largest marine-based shipping center of Greece, one of the largest ports in Europe, and considered the second largest passenger port in the world. Inhabited since the 26th Century, it wasn’t until the 6th Century B.C. that Piraeus began catching attention. The land of Piraeus was essentially impassable, flooded by the sea most of the year until centuries passed and the flooding ceased. By the 5th Century B.C. it became a navy base for the Athenian fleet for the natural harbors and the strategic potential they carried. Athenian general and politician Themistocles fortified Piraeus’ three harbors Kantharos, Zea and Munichia, created ship houses and completed his walls in 471 B.C., which led to the port becoming a great military and commercial harbor. There are many archaeological sites, points of interest and entertainment available in Piraeus. Most famous for its tavernas and cuisine, several popular events take place in Piraeus, such as the Ecocinema International Film Festival, the Maritime Festival, the Piraeus Rock Wave Festival and the Three Kings’ Way Festival. There are also many theaters, including the Municipal Theater, the open air Veakeio Theater, and the Menandreio Theater. Museums in Piraeus include the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, the Merchant Shipping History Institute Exhibition, the Panos Aravantinos Decor Museum, the Georgios Averof Museum Ship and the Museum of Electric Railways. Be sure to catch the panoramic views available from the hill of Kastella, overlooking Athens and the Saronic Gulf!

  • Sarande (Butrint), Albania - Butrint National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site

    Description

One of the original founders of the Butrint National Park, Mr. Auron Tare, is your expert guide that will lead you on the discovery of this ancient city. Butrint is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site possessing over 3,000 years of astonishing history revealed to you by a renowned historian, journalist, and cultural heritage expert at Albania’s most magical archaeological site in the country.

Your panoramic drive will take you to the World Heritage Site of Butrint which is located on the Ksamil Peninsula. Along the way Mr. Tare will share the local history and culture of Albania and its citizens. The area of Butrint has been the site of pre-Greek civilizations, a Roman City, a Byzantine Port and has even fallen under the influence of the Normans, Venetians, and the Ottomans. The present archaeological site is a collection of ruins representing each period in the city’s development.

The rich history of Butrint has left important vestiges across the territory of the park. The principal architectural monuments in the park includes a Graeco Roman theatre, Dionysus altar, Nymphaeum, Thermae, Gymnasium, Forum, Aqueduct, the temples of Minerva and Asclepius, the Lion Gate and a Baptistery. The Theatre of Butrint is among the best-preserved ancient theater in Albania. The theatre was built in the 3rd century BC, possibly on the walls of an older and smaller theatre.

The Castle of Ali Pasha Tepelena lies opposite the entrance of Butrint. It is named after the Albanian ruler Ali Pasha of Ioannina, who ruled over the Pashalik of Yanina. Another major attraction seen is the Lion Gate at one of the six entrances to the city from the 4th century BC. The inscription shows a lion, that is about to eat a bull. The lion symbolizes the inhabitants of the city and the bull as their enemies. The gate has a very narrow passage to allow as few people as possible to enter at the same time.

There is time to browse the museum which was restored within the last 10 years and a major attraction of the site. Inside you’ll find several artifacts discovered at the site among them the Busts of the Imperial Family and other statues. After your time at Butrint a brief stop will be made for a refreshment on the way back to your yacht waiting at the port.

  • Fiskardo, Kefalonia - Best of Cephalonia

    Description

Revel in the highlights of Cephalonia such as the amazing Melissani Lake and the remarkable cave of Drogarati, while enjoying scenic views and a Greek lunch in a Greek village.

Cephalonia Island is famous for its unique geological phenomena such as caves and underground lakes.
Starting from Fiskardo, you take the main road and head south to the small village Karavomylos where the mysterious, 40,000-year-old, under-ground lake of Melissani is located. After an earthquake, the ceiling of the cave fell in, creating what may be one of the most impressive sights you have ever seen. • Pilos, Navarino Bay - Nestor’s Palace and Methoni Fortress

    Description

Visit the Ancient Palace of King Nestor and enjoy a stroll around the impressive ruins of Methoni Castle.

The tour begins with a visit of the ruins of King Nestor's Palace. Here you will be able to admire the room where the queen took her bath as well as the remains of what must have been a magnificent throne room with a huge hearth in its middle. Since the majority of the roofs and walls were constructed out of wood and stone, today only the stone remains. Even so, the palace remains an impressive example of ancient Greek antiquity.

After visiting Nestor’s Palace, proceed by coach to the Methoni village. Methoni has been identified as the city Pedasus, that Homer mentions under the name "ampeloessa" (of vine leaves), as the last of the seven "evnaiomena ptoliethra", that Agamemnon offers Achilles in order to subdue his rage. Along with the rest of Messenia, the town gained its independence from the Spartans in 369 BC. During the 4th century BC, Methoni was elaborately fortified and continued to remain autonomous well into the Imperial Roman era, when it enjoyed the favor of some emperors. During the Byzantine years it continued to remain a remarkable harbor and one of the most important cities of the Peloponnese, seat of a bishopric. Nowadays the walls of the fortress, even though in ruins, continue to be impressive. The castle of Methoni occupies the entire area of the cape and the southwestern coast to the small islet that has also been fortified with an octagonal tower and is protected by the sea on three sides. A deep moat separates the castle from the land and access was by a wooden bridge. The Venetians built on the ancient battlements and added on and repaired it during both periods that they occupied the castle. After a guided tour, you depart Methoni for your return drive back to the pier and your SeaDream yacht.
