Depart Hvar Town by coach and travel across rolling hills dotted with vineyards and stone walls to Starigrad, the island’s oldest settlement, founded by the Greeks in 384 BC. Walk through narrow lanes lined with stone houses and visit the waterfront overlooking its sheltered bay. After a guided introduction to the town’s history and architecture, enjoy free time to explore the harbor promenade or browse the small local shops.
Continue inland to the village of Vrisnik, a traditional settlement surrounded by olive groves and family vineyards. Here, you are welcomed by a local host for a tasting of regional specialties, including island-produced wines accompanied by ham, cheese, and bread. The experience offers a direct introduction to Hvar’s agricultural heritage and small-scale production methods. Restrooms are available at this stop before the journey continues toward one of the island’s most commanding viewpoints.
Conclude your exploration at the Spagnola Fortress, perched high above Hvar Town. From this elevated vantage point, take in panoramic views across the terracotta rooftops, the harbor below, and the scattered Pakleni Islands stretching across the Adriatic. After time to enjoy the scenery and photographs, return by coach to Hvar Town, completing a well-rounded introduction to the island’s history, landscapes, and local traditions.
Notes: This tour involves a moderate level of activity and requires intermittent effort throughout, including guided walking tours in Starigrad and in the Hvar area. The excursion is not wheelchair accessible. Historic town centers such as Starigrad feature stone-paved streets and uneven surfaces that may be irregular underfoot. The area around the Spagnola Fortress includes elevated viewpoints and stone pathways, which may involve inclines. The drive across the island follows curving rural roads. Comfortable clothing, good walking shoes, and sun protection are recommended.
