Lofoten Impressions & Local Artists

Lofoten’s dramatic scenery is shaped not only by nature, but also by the generations of people who have lived and worked along its rugged shores. This scenic journey from Reine combines spectacular coastal landscapes with encounters that reveal the region’s fishing traditions, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage.

Your tour begins with a drive through the southern islands of Lofoten, where narrow roads weave between towering granite peaks, sheltered fjords, and traditional fishing villages perched at the edge of the sea. Traveling through this striking landscape, you arrive in the village of Sund, long known as a center for fishing and boatbuilding.

At the Lofoten Fishery Museum, the region’s maritime history comes vividly to life. Exhibits of traditional fishing boats, equipment, and coastal buildings illustrate the importance of the great seasonal cod fisheries that sustained communities across the archipelago. Nearby, a master blacksmith demonstrates the centuries-old craft of forging wrought iron, creating distinctive cormorant sculptures that are now held in collections around the world. You also step inside a preserved fisherman’s cabin, offering an intimate glimpse into the everyday life of Lofoten’s seafaring families.

Continuing along the coast, you travel to Flakstad Church, one of the oldest churches in Lofoten. Built in 1780 from Russian timber obtained through the historic Pomor trade, the church reflects a fascinating blend of Norwegian and Russian influences, a reminder of the centuries of exchange that shaped northern coastal communities.

Your final stop takes you to the windswept shoreline of Vikten, home to the renowned Vikten Glasshytta. Founded in 1976, this workshop introduced glassblowing to Northern Norway. Inside the studio, watch skilled artisans transform glowing molten glass into elegant works of art while waves roll onto the nearby beach. Time is set aside to explore the gallery and appreciate how the surrounding landscape continues to inspire this creative tradition.

The return journey to Reine offers another opportunity to admire Lofoten’s extraordinary scenery, where jagged mountains rise directly from the sea, colorful fishing villages dot the coastline, and open stretches of Arctic shoreline extend toward the horizon.

Notes: This tour includes optional walking of approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) over uneven terrain with gradual slopes. Surfaces at rural stops may include gravel, compacted earth, and uneven ground typical of fishing villages and coastal communities. Short walks are required at the Fishery Museum and fisherman’s cabin. If Flakstad Church is closed due to a ceremony or other event, the visit will be limited to an exterior viewing. At Flakstad Church, guests will encounter stone thresholds and standing is required. Guests are advised to dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions and to wear comfortable walking shoes.
