Guernsey’s Military History

Guernsey’s Military History

Depart the harbor by minibus accompanied by a specialist guide and travel westward to Fort Hommet, a coastal stronghold that illustrates Guernsey’s strategic role during the Second World War. Here, guests visit the M-19 automatic mortar bunker and the adjoining personnel shelter, part of the German defensive network constructed during the occupation of the Channel Islands. The guide explains how these reinforced positions were designed to control approaches along the coast. From the fortifications, the surrounding shoreline and defensive landscape provide a clear impression of how the island’s natural geography was incorporated into military planning.

Continuing along the island’s west coast, the drive offers changing views of Guernsey’s beaches and rocky headlands. A comfort stop is made at Portelet, where guests may purchase refreshments such as a crab sandwich or locally made ice cream while overlooking the bay. The tour then proceeds to Pleinmont Point to visit Batterie Dollman, one of the island’s coastal artillery positions. From this exposed headland, guests see sweeping views across the sea toward the Hanois Lighthouse, an isolated granite tower standing on offshore rocks that once marked an important navigational point.

The final visit is to the German Occupation Museum, created from a private collection assembled over many years. Inside, guests explore detailed displays of wartime artefacts, military equipment, and restored vehicles that illustrate daily life during the occupation. A reconstructed period street scene recreates the atmosphere of the era, while exhibits document both military operations and civilian experiences on the island. After time to explore the collection, guests reboard the minibus for the return drive to the harbor, concluding the tour.

Notes: Guests are required to walk from the minibus over uneven common ground and tarmac to access the bunker sites. The total walking distance during the tour is approximately 1 km (0.6 miles). Inside the bunkers there are fewer than 10 steps in total. Terrain throughout the visit includes uneven common ground and tarmac surfaces. Credit or debit cards and USD are not accepted at the museum. Guests are advised to wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and to bring a windproof or waterproof jacket.
