St Davids: Britain’s Smallest City

St Davids: Britain’s Smallest City

Departing Fishguard, travel inland through the rolling countryside of Pembrokeshire, a landscape of open farmland, stone walls, and coastal hills characteristic of southwest Wales. The drive leads to the small city of St Davids, renowned as the smallest city in Britain. Here you visit St Davids Cathedral, an imposing medieval structure built in the 12th century and notably positioned below the surrounding ground level, a deliberate design intended to conceal the building from Norse raiders approaching from the sea. Inside, observe the cathedral’s distinctive architecture, including a floor that slopes by nearly 1 meter and pillars that lean slightly as a result of an earthquake recorded in 1248.

After visiting the cathedral, guests have free time to explore the historic center of St Davids independently. Nearby stand the extensive remains of the Bishop’s Palace, an impressive medieval complex dating to the 12th century, viewed from the outside during the visit. The ruins once served as the residence of the bishops who governed this important ecclesiastical center. During free time, guests may stroll through the small city’s streets and browse local shops offering regional crafts and souvenirs before rejoining the coach for the scenic return journey through the Welsh countryside to Fishguard.

Notes: The total walking distance may be up to 3 km (2 miles). Walking takes place over mixed terrain and may include uneven surfaces and steps. The town of St Davids is compact but built on uneven and sloping terrain typical of historic Welsh settlements, and the route includes steep areas. There is a long hill and/or steps leading down to the cathedral, which some guests may find difficult. Wheelchair users must be accompanied by a companion responsible for providing assistance throughout the tour. Comfortable footwear is recommended. A waterproof jacket is recommended in case of inclement weather. St Davids Cathedral remains an active place of worship and public amenity and may close at short notice due to funeral ceremonies, christenings, or other services; visitor access may be affected and quiet conduct is required inside the cathedral.
