Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride & Toast Rack

Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride & Toast Rack

As you disembark the yacht, your guide will escort you to the base of Harbour Hill, where a tractor-drawn trailer, locally known as the “Toast Rack”, awaits to transport you up the steep incline to the Bel Air Tavern. At the top of the hill, you will meet your carriage driver and take your seat in a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Sark remains largely free of motor vehicles, and travelling by carriage offers a traditional way to explore the island’s narrow lanes. As your journey begins, the route leads through quiet countryside bordered by hedgerows and fields, with occasional views toward the surrounding coastline.

Your carriage continues northward to Banquete Landing, where you will see historic French-style cottages and the remains of a small coastal fort overlooking the sea. During the drive, a traditional stirrup cup is offered before the route proceeds across open countryside toward L’Eperquerie Common. This elevated headland provides broad coastal views, including a clear view of the neighboring island of Brecqhou lying just offshore. Along the way, the peaceful rural setting reveals farmland, stone walls, and the distinctive character of an island where traditional forms of transport remain part of everyday life.

The journey concludes at La Seigneurie Gardens, located within the grounds of the historic residence of the Seigneur of Sark. Here you will see the formal gardens, including the rose garden bordered by box hedging and the Millennium Rose Garden created in 2000. The gardens also feature plantings such as Australian bottlebrush and New Zealand tea tree, alongside a productive vegetable garden that supplies the estate café. After visiting the gardens, you may choose to walk approximately ten minutes back to the top of Harbour Hill or remain in the carriage for the return to the hilltop, where the tractor trailer will take you back down to the harbor.

Notes: Guests must be able to climb onto both the tractor and the horse-drawn carriage. Access requires several steep steps when boarding the carriage and the tractor-drawn “Toast Rack” trailer used for transfers up and down Harbour Hill. Transfers are conducted using a tractor-drawn trailer with bench seating, a basic and rustic form of transport commonly used on Sark. The horse-drawn carriage used during the tour is generally open-top, and guests should be prepared for exposure to the elements. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are recommended, along with a windproof and waterproof jacket due to changing weather conditions. Sark is largely free of motor vehicles, and transportation on the island is limited to tractors, bicycles, and horse-drawn carriages. Guests should expect simple, traditional forms of transport rather than modern vehicles. This tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility.
