St Martin’s Highlights Walk
St Martin’s Highlights Walk
The tour begins at either St Martin’s Lower Town Quay or Higher Town Quay, where guests meet their local guide before setting out on a walk across the island. The route follows sandy coastal paths that trace the rugged shoreline, revealing views of the surrounding archipelago and a series of white sand beaches. As the walk progresses, the guide shares insights into life on St Martin’s and the wider Isles of Scilly, providing context about the island community and its maritime setting.
Continuing along coastal paths and gently rising terrain, the walk reaches the island’s Daymark, a prominent navigation landmark constructed to guide vessels safely through the waters surrounding the Isles of Scilly. From this elevated vantage point, guests enjoy expansive views across neighboring islands and the open Atlantic. The route then continues to COSMOS, the community observatory on St Martin’s and the most south-westerly observatory in Britain, where the guide explains its role within the island community.
The walk continues toward the far side of the island, passing areas that reflect St Martin’s small but vibrant arts and crafts scene. Studios and displays showcase the work of local makers, offering an opportunity to observe handcrafted items produced on the island. The tour concludes at the quay on the other side of St Martin’s, where guests return to the waterfront to meet their tender for the return journey.
Notes: The walk follows sandy coastal paths and natural island tracks, including sections with steep hills and occasional trip hazards along sandy surfaces. Some areas may become soft or uneven after rain due to sandy soil and natural erosion along the shoreline. Additional steep sections may be encountered when crossing the island’s higher ground and coastal ridges. St Martin’s is a small, car-free island where most travel takes place on foot along established paths. Guests should wear sensible shoes and clothing adapted to changing weather conditions.
