Tresco Abbey Gardens Guided Walk
Tresco Abbey Gardens Guided Walk
Guests will meet their guide before beginning a walk through Tresco Abbey Gardens, a 17-acre botanical collection known for plants originating from Mediterranean climate zones around the world. Led by one of the gardens’ own gardeners, the guided visit follows paved and gravel paths through carefully cultivated sections of the estate. Along the lower paths, guests walk beneath tree ferns while observing distinctive species such as Protea from South Africa, Banksia from Australia, New Zealand Christmas trees, and Norfolk Island pines. Throughout the walk, the guide explains the characteristics of selected plants and shares insights into maintaining this diverse collection on a remote island.
As the tour continues through different areas of the gardens, the guide highlights notable specimens and explains how Tresco’s mild maritime climate allows species from several continents to grow successfully in this sheltered environment. The walk then leads to the Valhalla Museum, where guests view an unusual maritime display of figureheads, name boards, and decorative ship carvings recovered from vessels wrecked around the Isles of Scilly during the age of sail. This collection reflects the long maritime history of the surrounding waters.
During the remainder of the visit, guests continue exploring the gardens and may observe wildlife that inhabits the grounds, including red squirrels, golden pheasants, and Lady Amherst pheasants. After the guided portion of the visit, guests have time to explore independently before returning to the café area, for refreshments before concluding the visit.
Notes: Access to the gardens requires a moderate walk of approximately 5–10 minutes each way from the quay. Within the gardens, guests follow paved and gravel paths and should expect moderate walking throughout the visit. Garden paths consist of a combination of paved and gravel surfaces, and some areas include gentle slopes and uneven ground typical of landscaped botanical gardens; surfaces may also become damp or slippery after rain. Plant displays vary throughout the year according to seasonal flowering cycles, and certain plant species may be in bloom only during specific months. The gardens are also home to small wildlife, including red squirrels and ornamental pheasants that move freely within the grounds.
