Tresco’s Island Bees Experience

Tresco’s Island Bees Experience

Guests will meet the island’s beekeeper before beginning a guided exploration of the nectar-rich grounds of Tresco Abbey Gardens, a botanical collection featuring plants from more than 80 countries. Walking through the cultivated sections of the gardens, the beekeeper introduces the bee colonies that thrive among the diverse plant species and explains how the surrounding flora provides a rich source of nectar. As the group moves along paved and gravel garden paths, guests learn about the lives of the Scilly bees and the relationship between the island’s unique plant collection and the honey produced there.

Leaving the main garden area, the tour continues beyond the garden walls to visit the community-built Rocket Hives. Here, the beekeeper explains the purpose of these hives and describes the work of the Scilly Bee Project and the wider bee community across the Isles of Scilly. This portion of the visit focuses on how the local environment supports the bees and how the project contributes to maintaining healthy bee populations on the islands.

The experience concludes back within Tresco Abbey Gardens, where guests gather for a tasting of the golden honey produced by the island’s bees. During this final portion of the visit, participants have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the beekeeping process while sampling the honey created from the gardens’ diverse plant life. After the tasting and discussion, guests have time to explore the gardens independently before returning for the tender departure.

Notes: Access to the gardens requires a moderate walk of approximately 5–10 minutes each way from the quay. Guests should expect moderate walking throughout the visit along paved and gravel garden paths. Some areas may include gentle slopes and uneven ground typical of landscaped botanical gardens. Garden paths may become damp after rain due to the coastal climate. Guests should wear sensible shoes and clothing adapted to changing weather conditions. Plant flowering cycles vary throughout the year, and the appearance of the gardens changes with the seasons. Bee activity levels may also vary depending on temperature, weather conditions, and seasonal nectar availability.
