Bayeux - Viking Normandy, "1066 and All That"

Bayeux - Viking Normandy, "1066 and All That"

Bayeux, close to the D-Day beaches, was the first French town to be liberated during the invasion. The town, fortunately, was not damaged during the war. The cathedral still keeps watch over the town and the Bayeux Tapestry presents its unique record of events of 1066 from the rivalry between England's King Harold and the Viking William, to the conquest and final Norman victory. The Bayeux tapestry is displayed in the William the Conqueror Centre in an impressive 18c. building which was a seminary until 1970. This jewel of Romanesque Art is presented in different sections, the complete tapestry being 224 feet long. The William Room relates with audiovisual film the exploits of the Vikings and with a strip cartoon explaining the Vikings invasion and the contents of the Tapestry. Before admiring the Tapestry itself you will see a film describing the Battle of Hastings in which King Harold fell with, as legend has it, an arrow in his eye. The embroidery in coloured wool on a piece of linen remains the most accurate and lively document to survive from the Middle Ages by providing detailed information on the clothes, ships, arms and general manners of the period. After this visit, we will view the fine Norman Gothic Cathedral with original parts of the crypt and lower part of the nave dating from the 11th Century. During the Gothic Period (13c.) a superb chancel and a Norman Gallery was added. After this visit we will return through the countryside to our yacht docked in Caen.
