D-Day & The Landing Beaches - 1944

We start our tour by disembarking the yacht in the locks at the seaside resort of Ouistreham. Our first stop is at Pegasus Bridge on the Caen Canal which was the scene of the first operation in the early morning hours of D- Day. A gliderborne unit of the British 6th Airborne Division was to land, take Pegasus and nearby bridges intact and hold them until relieved. The successful capture of the bridges played an important role in limiting the effectiveness of a German counter-attack in the days and weeks following. The original bridge is now the centerpiece of a museum on the site.

We then drive to Arromanches, a modest seaside resort, which owes its fame to the fantastic "Mulberry" operation which was an integral part of the Allied Landing in Europe in June 1944. This artificial harbour was one of the most extraordinary achievements of the whole war. You will see the remains of this artificial port which enabled allied forces to quickly land equipment and supplies. We pass Gold Beach on our way to Arromanches. Our next stop is a guided visit of the Landing Museum which depicts with models and films the whole landing operation. We then drive to Colleville Sur Mer, stopping at the American Cemetery where more than 9,000 marble crosses stand aligned in an impressive site overlooking Omaha Beach. A memorial, inscribed with a map of the operation, and preceded by a pool stands in the central alley surrounded by trees. After making a photostop at Omaha beach we drive though the Normandy countryside on our way back to the yacht in Caen.
