Depart Longyearbyen for Hornsund, Svalbard's grandest southern fjord, where polar bears pad the floe edge and beluga whales surface in milky pods. Continue to lonely Jan Mayen, brooding beneath Beerenberg, the world's northernmost active volcano, reached only by rare permit and favorable weather. The yacht threads Greenland's vast Scoresby Sund, drifting among icebergs beneath the Stauning Alps, before crossing to Iceland's Eastfjords at Seyðisfjörður, its rainbow-painted street leading to a small blue church. Siglufjörður recalls its herring boomtown days at the Herring Era Museum, while Akureyri, the graceful capital of the north, opens onto the thundering falls of Godafoss and the geothermal baths of Lake Mývatn. Ísafjörður, capital of the wild Westfjords, sits cradled by flat-topped mountains and mirror-still water, puffins crowding nearby Vigur island. A grand finale in Reykjavík, the world's northernmost capital, where the soaring Hallgrímskirkja and geothermal pools mark the gateway to Iceland's fire and ice.
