Androsia Batik & Captain Bill Blue Hole
Androsia Batik & Captain Bill Blue Hole
Discover the artistry and natural beauty of Andros on a curated journey that combines island craftsmanship with one of the Bahamas’ most extraordinary natural wonders. Travel from the tender landing at Small Hope Bay Lodge to the Androsia Batik factory, where artisans demonstrate the traditional hand-waxing and dyeing techniques used to create the island’s signature fabric. Walk through the production rooms to observe each stage of the process, from design to drying.
Guests are then invited to participate in a hands-on Batik workshop, guided through the process of applying wax and printing their own design. Each participant creates a personalized piece, selecting from two color options before the Androsia team completes the dyeing process. Finished items are prepared by the studio and shipped directly to participants’ home addresses approximately one week later.
Continue inland to Captain Bill’s Blue Hole, a remarkable freshwater sinkhole set within pine forest. Upon arrival, a local guide introduces the surrounding flora during an engaging bush medicine presentation, explaining how specific plants have been traditionally prepared and used. A safety briefing follows before guests descend to the water’s edge, where the vivid sapphire pool reveals impressive depth and clarity framed by limestone rock.
Enter the calm waters for a supervised swim in this naturally formed blue hole, home to unique cave fish and small invertebrates found only in these ecosystems. Light refreshments are served at the site, allowing time to relax and absorb the quiet beauty of the setting before returning to the yacht. This thoughtfully paced excursion blends cultural heritage, creative participation, and refreshing immersion in one of Andros’ most distinctive landscapes.
Notes: Guests must be able to manage steps at the tender landing at Small Hope Bay Lodge, at Androsia Batik, and when accessing Captain Bill’s Blue Hole. The setting at the Blue Hole is natural and undeveloped, and surfaces may be uneven, consisting of natural ground and rock. This tour is not wheelchair accessible. Captain Bill’s Blue Hole is a freshwater site rather than saltwater. The water temperature is typically cooler than the surrounding sea, particularly upon entry. The depth increases quickly, and although swimming is supervised, participants should be comfortable in open natural water. Entry is from a natural edge; there is no sandy, gradual beach-style access. Guests are recommended to bring a swimsuit with cover-up, hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes suitable for natural terrain.
