The World of Robert Burns
The World of Robert Burns
Depart Troon for a short drive south into Ayrshire to the village of Alloway, birthplace of the world-renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns. Today the area preserves many sites connected with Burns’ life and work. On arrival, your guide will introduce the park and provide an overview of the locations you will have the opportunity to explore.
You will then have time to explore the park at leisure, with your guide available to answer questions. The restored Burns Cottage offers insight into the poet’s childhood and the modest surroundings in which he grew up. Continue through the grounds to the atmospheric Alloway Auld Kirk, where Burns’ father is buried, and cross the historic Brig o’ Doon, famously referenced in Burns’ poem Tam o’ Shanter.
During your visit, you may also see the Burns Monument, one of the earliest landmarks dedicated to the poet and a focal point for Burns tourism since 1823. Nearby, the Statue House displays sculptures created by the self-taught artist James Thom depicting characters from Burns’ life and writings.
